Treatment with Invisalign

Crossbite Treatment with Invisalign

Crossbite is a condition where one or more upper teeth close inside the lower teeth instead of outside. It can be effectively treated with Invisalign clear aligners.

Symptoms

  • Jaw shifting to one side when biting
  • Facial asymmetry in growing children
  • Gum recession on affected teeth
  • Uneven wear on teeth surfaces
  • One-sided chewing habit
  • Difficulty biting front or back teeth correctly

Crossbite Treatment with Invisalign

Crossbite occurs when one or more upper teeth close inside the lower teeth instead of outside them. It can affect the front teeth (anterior crossbite) or the back teeth (posterior crossbite), and may involve a single tooth or several teeth at once.

Causes

Crossbite can result from a narrow upper jaw, delayed loss of baby teeth, abnormal eruption of permanent teeth, mouth breathing, or thumb sucking during childhood. Genetic factors that affect jaw width and tooth size are often involved. In some cases, untreated crossbite from childhood persists into adulthood.

What Happens If Left Untreated

Untreated crossbite can cause asymmetric jaw development, gum recession, bone loss around affected teeth, accelerated tooth wear, and temporomandibular joint problems. Children may develop facial asymmetry as their jaw grows around the misaligned bite. Severe gum recession may eventually require periodontal treatment.

At Doredent, both anterior and posterior crossbite cases are effectively treated with Invisalign through digital orthodontics. Our Invisalign Diamond Provider Dr. Merve Özkan Akagündüz uses iTero digital scanning to plan precise tooth movements that correct the crossbite without compromising facial balance.

Frequently Asked Questions About Crossbite

Anterior crossbite affects the front teeth, where one or more upper front teeth sit behind the lower front teeth. Posterior crossbite affects the back teeth, where the upper back teeth close inside the lower back teeth. Both types can be treated with Invisalign, though posterior crossbite often requires expanding the upper arch as part of treatment.

Yes, especially in children. If untreated during jaw growth, the jaw may develop asymmetrically as the child shifts their bite to accommodate the crossbite. This is why early diagnosis through pediatric dentistry is critical. In adults, the asymmetry is already established but can often still be improved with proper treatment.

Treatment time depends on the type and severity. A single-tooth crossbite may resolve in 6–9 months, while complex multi-tooth crossbites can require 12–18 months. Your exact timeline is confirmed after the iTero digital scan.

Crossbite treatment removes the abnormal pressure causing the gum recession, which prevents further damage. However, gums that have already receded don't grow back on their own. In some cases, a periodontal procedure may be recommended to restore lost gum tissue after orthodontic treatment.

Yes — many crossbite cases in adults are successfully treated with Invisalign. Skeletal expansion is more challenging in adults than in children, so very severe cases may need additional auxiliaries or, rarely, surgical intervention. Most dental crossbites in adults can be resolved with Invisalign alone.
