Laminate Veneer

For laminate veneers, minimal tooth preparation is required. The amount of preparation varies from tooth to tooth but can be said to range from 0.3 to 0.7 mm. These amounts are at the enamel level of the tooth, preserving the tooth structure and preventing sensitivity problems or pain.

There is a common misconception that laminates are only made of porcelain since they are also called porcelain laminates. However, this is not entirely accurate. Laminates are divided into two groups: composite laminates and porcelain laminates. Composite laminate is a same-day aesthetic application performed by dentists who have developed themselves in the field of aesthetics by applying aesthetic filling materials to the front surface of the tooth. Porcelain laminate, on the other hand, is made in a laboratory environment after taking measurements from the tooth and then attached to the surface of the teeth using a special adhesive.

Porcelain laminates, being polished in a laboratory environment, are much shinier than composite laminates. They are less prone to discoloration and are therefore more preferred. However, if they break for any reason, repairing them is difficult and they may need to be completely replaced. In this regard, composite laminates have an advantage as they can be easily repaired with filling materials.

Laminates can be used in cases such as discoloration of old fillings in the front teeth, structural shape and color abnormalities in the teeth, or presence of wear or fractures in the teeth. Good oral hygiene is essential, and the tooth or teeth to be laminated must have sufficient enamel tissue.

The lifespan of laminates varies depending on the individual’s oral hygiene conditions and whether they are applied correctly. Well-made and well-maintained laminates can last approximately 10-15 years.

How to Care for Laminate Teeth?

There is no need for different or additional practices for the care of laminate teeth. Laminate teeth can be considered similar to natural teeth. Following the normal daily oral care routine is sufficient. Brushing the teeth with toothpaste and a toothbrush at least twice a day is necessary. Dental flossing should be added to the daily routine. Using mouthwash a few times a week is also beneficial. Regular dental check-ups are recommended for monitoring laminate teeth.
