Underbite Treatment with Invisalign

An underbite occurs when the lower jaw or lower teeth extend beyond the upper jaw and teeth. It is also known as reverse bite, mandibular protrusion, or in medical terminology, prognathism (mandibular prognathism). Normally, the upper teeth sit slightly in front of the lower teeth; when this relationship is reversed, an underbite develops.

Causes

An underbite is usually caused by genetic factors. Excessive growth of the lower jaw, underdevelopment of the upper jaw, or a combination of both can lead to this condition. Prolonged pacifier use, thumb sucking, or tongue thrusting habits during childhood can also increase the risk. Regular pediatric dental checkups are recommended to detect these habits early.

If Left Untreated

An untreated underbite can lead to speech difficulties, chewing problems, TMJ pain, abnormal tooth wear, and facial asymmetry over time. Worn teeth may require restoration with zirconia crowns. Early intervention significantly reduces these risks.

At Doredent, your underbite is thoroughly analyzed with an iTero digital scan and a personalized Invisalign treatment plan is created for you. Alternatively, braces treatment may also be considered.

Frequently Asked Questions About Underbite

An underbite is usually caused by genetic factors. Excessive growth of the lower jaw or underdevelopment of the upper jaw are the most common causes. Certain childhood habits such as prolonged pacifier use and thumb sucking can also increase the risk. Regular pediatric dental checkups are therefore important.

Mild cases may take 6 to 12 months, while moderate cases can take 12 to 18 months. At Doredent, your treatment duration and aligner count are determined at the first digital scan.

Mild to moderate underbite cases are successfully treated with Invisalign. For severe skeletal cases, your orthodontist may recommend surgically assisted treatment or braces treatment.

Invisalign treatment generally causes very little discomfort. You may feel slight pressure during the first 1 to 2 days of each new aligner set, which subsides quickly.

An untreated underbite can lead to speech difficulties, chewing problems, TMJ issues, tooth wear, and facial asymmetry over time. Worn teeth may require restoration with porcelain or zirconia crowns. If tooth loss occurs, dental implants may be considered.

When you visit Doredent, our orthodontist captures a 3D image of your mouth using the iTero digital scanner. The process takes approximately 5 minutes, is completely painless, and is far more comfortable than traditional impressions. After the scan, your current dental condition and the expected treatment outcome are shown to you instantly.
